ebook Call Numbers

We keep the 050/090 for ebooks when MARC records are downloaded. The
call number data is not used as call numbers for ebooks in our
library, but they have been used routinely by us for many other
purposes (collection development, statistics based on call number
range, etc. etc.) In a network shared environment, I think that
keeping data in the MARC records are encouraging sharing by more
libraries as long as they are correct and not interfering with
discovery and delivery. Keeping data in the record which have been
created by someone (may be spending time on it) will not compromise
the integrity of the database. You can decide on what data to
display, index and use in our current ILS landscape. We are now
getting MARC records from so many different sources, keeping data as
is will simplify record source tracking.
