We have 8 iPads that can be used by our patrons as follows:
* Requires a Library Card from any library in Polk County.
* Must leave your Driver's License or a current photo ID for security
* May only be used INSIDE the Library
* Check-out time: 2 hours
* May renew for an additional 2 hours if no one is waiting
* $1.00 per hour late fee if not returned on time
* Holds not permitted
* Youths 17 and under must have a legally responsible adult (parent or caregiver) check out the iPad.
Patron are not permitted to download apps and cannot set up their email accounts on the iPads. They can, however, check email via the internet using Safari.
The iPads are cataloged and we check them out to the person. Each iPad is numbered 1 through 8 and has a cooresponding card with a barcode. These cards are kept on a ring and we paperclip the patron's driver's license to the appropriate card. We have check out, check in and maintenance instructions for staff.
If anyone is interested in these instructions as well as the sign we use, just email me at lbabli at mywinterhaven.com

I have used join.me as a screen sharing site for capturing error messages on other peoples computers (Mac and PC). But I don't remember any video conferencing capabilities in it. If there is something there join.me I don't know about, I would love to hear about it.

Hi everyone,
We are looking into web-conferencing options to support our DE students and
were wondering if anyone on the list has used join.me to accomplish this?
If you have, would you be able to share your experiences? If you use
another product (Skype, WebEx, etc...), we would also love to hear about
your experiences.
In particular, we're interested in hearing about best-practices and/or any
significant hurdles to overcome in providing synchronous support and
instruction to DE students.
Please feel free to email me off-line. And if anyone is interested, I'll be
happy to compile the results and share them.
Thanks in advance!
-Eva

We use GoToMeeting, which is reliable and includes POTS and VOIP voice
conferencing.
join.me seems to be a platform for marketing their paid service, much
as they do with the free version of their main product, LogMeIn.
You can acheive great economy through free and open-source software.
Free services, on the other hand, usually have a gotcha.

I apologize in advance for the cross-posting of this message. I'm
curious to hear how folks are using iPads in their libraries. If folks
would want to respond to me I can compile responses for the list.
Thanks

Hello, all. The 1.0 version of SubjectsPlus is available:
http://code.google.com/p/subjectsplus/downloads/list
// What is SubjectsPlus? //
SubjectsPlus is a free and open source LAMP application to manage your
subject/course guides, and can also produce an A-Z list of databases,
staff list, FAQs, and a suggestion box. It's completely customizable
so you can integrate it seamlessly into your existing website (with a
little work) or you can just stick in your header/footer.
You can find out more from the informational website:
http://www.subjectsplus.com/
There's also a wiki with helpful docs:
http://www.subjectsplus.com/wiki/
and a Google group where you can ask questions and share ideas:
http://groups.google.com/group/subjectsplus
// New in 1.0 //
* Improved default public pages (but you should still localize them)
* Completely rewritten/improved admin
* More flexible guide layouts
* Proper internationalization support (French version mostly done,
others coming as soon as someone does it)
