Just come across this today.
Barnes and Noble may phase out the Nook 3G
By Hayley Tsukayama
Endgadget reported Monday night that Barnes and Noble is planning to phase out
the Nook 3G based on "hard evidence from within B&N." The blog said the bookstore
told its stores not to fill bulk Nook 3G orders, as supply would not be able to
keep pace with bulk orders.
They followed that up with a clarification from the company saying that the
discontinuation is not "due to the lack of bulk sales, they're just the first
casualty of a dwindling supply."
Endgaget seems to think that the WiFi-enabled Nook has taken over any market
share the 3G Nook might have commanded. Over at CNET, they're a bit skeptical of
the rumor and speculate that the bookstore will continue offering "some sort of
sub-$200 3G-enabled Nook" to continue competing with Amazon's Kindle.
It's hard to say what will happen -- particularly without knowing what manner
of "hard evidence" Endgadget has -- but if you've been thinking about buying a 3G
Nook, you might want to break open that piggy bank now. Just in case.
