[Web4lib] Libweb - So Long and Thanks for All the Fish

Just to be clear, Web4Lib is not going away. I will be making an
announcement about a slight transition later when I know more about timing,
but what I know now is that we will be moving from Mailman to LISTSERV,
still hosted by OCLC. The web site, however, will move to its own domain
that I am hosting. There should be no significant interruption in service,
and I'm hopeful that you will need to do nothing except perhaps change a
bookmark.

Now a few words about Thomas' announcement. I feel like seeing Libweb go is
like witnessing the end of an era. Thomas started Libweb just days after I
started the Web4Lib discussion at UC Berkeley. Those were heady days as we
were just getting started in learning this new thing called HTML and more
about design than any of us thought we ever would or could. Well, some of us
that is. ;-)

Eventually I invited Thomas to transition Libweb from the University of
Washington to the UC Berkeley Digital Library SunSITE where it was for a
number of years until I left Berkeley and they lost interest in hosting it.
I then arranged to move Libweb, PubLib, Web4Lib, XML4Lib, and Current Cites
to WebJunction, long before I ended up joining OCLC. Now we are at another
transition. As I mentioned, OCLC will continue to host the lists if they
choose to remain, which Web4Lib, XML4Lib, and Current Cites do so choose.
However, the web addresses will change. As I have said, I will let you know
more about timing when I know more.

For now, allow me to thank Thomas for his long service to the library
community in creating and maintaining this directory for so many years.
Libweb will be missed, even as we acknowledge that the need for it has been
diminished. But...the Rosemary Garfoot Public Library? Really? ;-)
