Hello web4lib,

It took a while but this Firefox extension (initially published by
Openly Informatics and then by OCLC) has its Google Scholar and Google
News Archive functionality recovered.

Now the updated version (compatible with Firefox 4.0) is available for
download from the addons.mozilla.org (AMO) web site:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/openurl-referrer/

Few words on the history and functionality of this extension. It's first
version was inspired by the Google Scholar OpenURLs Firefox extension
by Peter Binkley - http://www.ualberta.ca/~pbinkley/gso/ - that was
inserting OpenURL (ver 0.1) links in Google Scholar search result pages
next to bibliographic citations. Consequently Openly and OCLC extended
the functionality using both OpenURL ver 0.1 and 1.0, covering Context
Objects in Spans (COinS - http://ocoins.info) and Google News Archive
search result pages, creating possibility for maintaining configuration
profiles.... For more info see http://nj.oclc.org/openurlref/

I have put some personal time in recovering the extension functionality
so far -- now there is a new team in OCLC that has ambitious plans to
improve further the extension functionality and availability for other
browsers. So please take time to try this version it would help the new
team.

For those that would update from previous versions - please keep in mind
the extension preferences were moved to a separate branch inside the
Firefox config properties - I have coded functionality that would move
old preferences to the new location, but if something is lost you can
check directly your Firefox configuration by typing about:config in the
location bar and then filtering on openurlref.
