Several respondents asked that I post a summary of replies. Here's what I
found out:
1) Everyone who responded uses Deep Freeze (on Windows XP or Windows 7);
several also use Windows group policy and/or SteadyState (on Windows XP).
2) Software updates occur occasionally, either when laptops are "in the
shop" for other reasons or on a scheduled basis.
3) All respondents either use a laptop storage cart with integrated
chargers or custom shelving with chargers added. One who used to use
storage carts said staff didn't like them because it was awkward to get
laptops in and out, and the cart doors sometimes pinched the cables.
4) No one had the magic hardware/software solution that keeps laptops
charged, unaltered, and updated without specific intervention. If someone
has that solution, I would sure like to hear about it.
Thanks to all who responded!
