Ahem. Note that we are still in the 2nd paragraph, ourselves, and are in the midst of re-designing. ;-)

It's all about packaging. Look at what you already provide 24/7 online - catalog, account info and manipulation, fines pay online maybe, 24/7 reference, databases, etc., and then talk to your marketing person about how best to present it, and ask them if they are willing to add Twitter to their list of places to disseminate event information, and populate a Facebook page with the Twitter posts. Publish booklists you have in print online. Add a Library Value Calculator.

This is immensely simplistic, and if possible I recommend a fair number of philosophical discussions with the director and managers of potential content-providers - adult, teen, and children's librarians most often, and then get some policies and procedures written up, with staff expectations agreed to.

Then train staff, and advertise!

As the Anaheim Public Library is downsizing staff and reducing open hours to the public, Library Administration wants me to help create a Virtual Library presence for the stated purpose of "Developing and deploying twenty first century library services that use the Internet and social networks to connect with users and promote library value."

So my first step toward this is to brainstorm for ideas on accomplishing this. That is where you come in. If you were given this assignment, what would you try to do?

First determine what you want to achieve, then obtain the best technology to attain that goal.
