I appreciate the preceding detailed arguments in favour of Wikipedia.

My comment is simple.  

I consider myself very fortunate to have an instant and free resource like Wikipedia. Most of my searches are non-academic. Usually I want some ready info on a politician, an actor, a historical event, etc. Wikipedia fulfills this requirement. It is always amazing to me how quickly event updates appear.

The bibliographical references feature to source material is superb. Often I will follow the link to a newspaper article, interview, etc. from which the Wikipedia article is drawn.
