The MIT Lincoln Laboratory Knowledge Services, a sector of the Laboratory's
Information Services Department (ISD) that includes the Library and
Archives, invite applications for the position of Knowledge Services Sector
Manager. We are seeking a dynamic Sector Manager who will have the
opportunity to shape programs, strategic directions, and service initiatives
in a collaborative Library, Archives, and information technology environment
within a complex and dynamic Federally Funded Research and Development
Center (FFRDC). The Lincoln Laboratory Library and Archives has earned a
reputation for providing excellent service to clients and assures that the
Chief Information Officer (CIO) delivers quality products that increase the
efficiency and effectiveness of the Laboratory to successfully meet its
commitments, and we actively seek to maintain that reputation.

Responsibilities

Reporting directly to the Chief Information Officer (CIO), this position
provides long-range strategic and tactical leadership and direction for the
continued evolution of Lincoln Laboratory's information and research
services that include expansive electronic and hard copy collections as well
as customer-intensive information research and document delivery services.
The applicant will be involved in the conceptual analysis, design and
implementation of new and emerging technologies in support of the
Laboratory's R&D missions across its Divisions. This individual will develop
effective assessment tools, strategies, and a program to ensure continuous
assessment and to facilitate strategic planning in order to provide
scientists and engineers with the information tools and research analysis
that will maintain Lincoln Laboratory's position as a nationally-renowned
research organization. This position requires an understanding of
information consumption across multiple channels, end user profiles and
technology platforms. Work accomplished in this sector will continue to
encourage the development of creative solutions, the use of emerging
information and collaboration technologies. The candidate will also be
responsible for the management of the Lincoln Laboratory Archives which
acquires, processes, preserves, and makes accessible via multiple media,
sixty years worth of scientific reports, memos, audio and video materials
used for web sites, internal and external publications, and other
mission-critical communications.

We are seeking a visionary leader who can direct, monitor and evaluate the
performance of sector employees while developing Library and Archives staff
skills to meet ever-changing new information technologies and processes via
regular skills reassessment, training, and refresh; manage, mentor, and
develop the careers of direct reports; and maintain an excellent working
environment for the entire sector.

The candidate will participate with other Sector Managers within ISD who
work collaboratively to support all information services projects to develop
and implement systems, technologies, and tools that will advance the Lincoln
Laboratory strategic missions. The successful candidate will be an
accomplished leader who is skilled in managing change and building
partnerships within and across the research community and other service
departments.

Externally, the Knowledge Services Sector Manager will represent the
Laboratory at meetings and conferences with professional, government, and
industry organizations in the area of information management.

Requirements:

Bachelor of Science in the sciences or engineering; an ALA accredited Master
of Science in Library Science required
10 years of professional library experience, preferably in an R&D
environment; progressively responsible positions, including management and
supervision of professional staff required
An understanding of the potential of the Library and Archives to explore and
develop new ways to deliver services via new media across the enterprise
A commitment to innovative and effective user-centered services and
collaborative tools
Demonstrated experience implementing enterprise
knowledge/information/content management solutions, including policy and
process
An awareness of emerging technologies and a record of reviewing/developing
creative ideas for adapting these technologies to further the Laboratory's
mission
An ability to foster an environment which is conducive to innovation,
creativity, and positive thinking
An ability to create concrete programs and services from conceptual goals
Solutions-oriented decision making skills
An ability to advocate effectively with information technology partners and
be an effective spokesperson for the Knowledge Services Sector
Outstanding communication, writing, and interpersonal skills with diverse
groups
The ability to obtain and maintain a government security clearance

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of or familiarity with metadata and taxonomy development and
design.
Knowledge of or familiarity with digital asset management (DAM) and
electronic archiving systems in order to help organize and deliver these
assets via online information discovery tools.
