I've found this to be true also. I've even been on discussion lists where people actually complain when we finally do get a discussion going because it clogs up their in-box! 

I'm a Twitter fan, but it is almost impossible to follow a discussion on it. The 140 character limit aside, you can't easily see the messages people reply to unless you are following both people. Hash tags help, but you have to rely on people to use them.
