Thanks to Cory and everyone else who replied on and off the list.
This confirms my suspicion that what I wanted to do is either not
possible or way more work than I had in mind.  If I have to put that
kind of time into it I'd rather ask for their data and manipulate it
myself, as some suggested.  I might do that after I finish testing the
rest of the project.
