BASIC FUNCTION AND SCOPE OF JOB
As a member of the University Library Team, this librarian will:
- Coordinate development of the University Library web presence, working collegially with others to create, assess, revise, and maintain web content, navigation, and access to resources.
- Provide reference and instruction to Golden Gate University students, faculty, staff, corporate and alumni members at all locations, including regional sites and those affiliated with the University via Cybercampus.
- Work with other library staff members and faculty to evaluate, select, and deselect materials in all relevant media.
- Participate in library planning, assessment, and evaluation.
- Collaborate with other staff in peer training and staff development.
- Serve as the library's subject specialist and liaison for assigned disciplines (to be determined based on candidate's experience and organizational needs) and maintain effective communication with faculty in liaison areas.
Schedule includes one regularly scheduled evening reference shift per week, and one or more weekend days per month.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Web Development:
This librarian is responsible for the overall content, functionality, and usability of the University Library's web presence.
As leader of the Library Web Team, this librarian works collegially with others:
- Coordinates the creation and management of the online content presented on the University Library's Web properties.
- Analyzes current content, as well as anticipating future content needs, and adjusts web information accordingly.
- Assesses effectiveness and usability of website; identifies improvements that consider the various needs and learning styles of GGU students and faculty.
Reference Services:
- Provides reference services to students (including CyberCampus and those at regional sites), faculty, staff, and corporate members of the library. Uses reference interactions as opportunities to help users develop key information literacy skills.
- Provides face-to-face and online research instruction to classes in liaison departments and to other classes as needed. Maintains effective communication with faculty in assigned subject areas.
- Orients patrons and prospective students to the range of print and online resources available.
- When on duty at reference desk on evenings and weekends, oversees library assistants and student workers in handling questions of policies, complaints, difficult patrons, and security issues.
Collection Development:
- Works with other library staff members and faculty in assigned subject areas to evaluate, select, and deselect materials in all relevant media.
- Creates and maintains web-based access to resources.
Planning, Assessment, and Evaluation:
- Participates in University Library planning, assessment, and evaluation.
- Participates in preparation of University Library policies.
- Participates in assessment of needs for computer and other library equipment.
Staff Development:
- Collaborates with staff in peer training and other staff development needs.
- Participates in relevant listservs for new resources, ideas, solutions, and recommendations.
Other:
- Participates in a variety of outreach activities, some of which occur on evenings and weekends.
- Completes special projects as assigned by the Director.
- Other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS

Required qualifications:
1. MLS or equivalent degree from an ALA accredited program.
2. One year of experience providing reference service in a library setting.
3. One year of experience teaching students, faculty, and other patrons to use print and electronic library resources.
4. Familiarity with information literacy concepts.
5. Excellent oral and written communication skills, including proficiency with English grammar and spelling; an understanding of the unique nature of writing and designing for the web.
6. Excellent interpersonal and team collaboration skills; ability to work both independently and as a team member on a variety of simultaneous projects.
7. Ability to communicate with and relate to an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community.
8. Experience maintaining a complex website with a content management system.
9. Demonstrated ability to design, build, and assess effective websites that are user- and instruction-oriented; some web coding experience with languages such as PHP, XHTML, and CSS.
10. Knowledge of best practices, standards, issues and trends relevant to web and information technology in academic libraries; flexible and open to incorporating new developments in web technology appropriate to adoption in the academic library environment
Preferred qualifications:
1. Knowledge of business reference and experience providing reference support to business students and others in professional practice education.
2. Experience providing reference support to patrons in distant locations, via e-mail, instant message, and telephone.
3. Ability to install and maintain web applications on LAMP architecture (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP).
4. Project management experience.
5. One year of professional experience providing reference and instruction in an academic library to a diverse clientele of adult undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students.
6. One year of experience in providing liaison duties with faculty, identifying collection development needs, locating and evaluating resources to meet those needs in light of organizational objectives and other requirements.
