The new Bibliocommons catalogue includes this for recently reviewed, newly received etc.

Currently it is live at Oakville Public Library

(Aside from this feature it is a remarkable new product - we are heading in that direction in the next few months)

Salomeh,

We get a lot of our streaming videos from Films.com (formerly FMG,
formerly Films for the Humanities and Sciences).  They have options
for streaming from their servers and from your own.. though the latter
isn't working yet I believe.

Our head of Media Services also negotiates deals with distributors on
a one by one basis for rights to locally digitize and stream content
for specific high use titles.  As I understand the current state of
things, most (or at least many) distributors of non-feature film type
content are willing to make deals, but they don't have the money,
infrastructure, etc, to deliver content, so they work is left to the
individual institutions--Films.com being the biggest exception.  Most
of them do not yet have a standard policy in place for pricing, etc,
either, so you have the chance to negotiate for the streaming rights.

We'd love to add a book carousel display on our website to highlight
our new titles and/ or other collections.

I'm thinking of displaying 3 or 4 book covers at a time, either
auto-scrolling or with left-right buttons.

Perhaps each image would have also have a mouse-over pop-up with more
information -- book summary, reviews, or whatever. Clicking on a cover
would of course link directly to the OPAC record.

Anyone have any favorite examples of this from the library world?

_Cataloging & Classification Quarterly_ will be publishing a special issue on 21st-century challenges for library administrators in the management and strategic planning of operations and personnel in cataloging and metadata departments.  The guest editor is looking for articles that articulate new directions and opinions, as well as case studies, related to re-visioning, repurposing, establishing efficiencies, and/or redirecting both workflows and personnel within cataloging and metadata departments.  Articles that examine how to justify and/or defend what are commonly known as â€œbehind-the-scenesâ€ or â€œback-endâ€ library operations and personnel in the current budget crisis are especially timely.  The guest editor is looking for a wide range of international participation, so proposals from authors outside of the United States are encouraged.  Articles can be of any length, and figures and screen shots are encouraged.

If you are interested in contributing, please send the guest editor your name, a short proposal of the topic, and a tentative title for the article.  Deadline for proposals is September 1, 2009.  Articles would be due to the guest editor by January 1, 2010.  Any questions can be directed to the guest editor.  Thank you.

Interesting David Carr article in the NY Times about Google and its book scanning.

Carr makes the observation that "Google is, broadly, the Wal-Mart of the Internet, a huge force that can set terms and price â€” in this case free â€” except Google is not selling hammers and CDs, it is operating at the vanguard of intellectual property."

He also quotes Google CEO Eric Schmidt as saying "What I think is great about books is that people just donâ€™t go to libraries that much, but they are in front of the computer all day."
