[Web4lib] Reference libraries today

There is a certain tradition within the anglo-saxon public library
sphere (at least) of keeping separate reference libraries or branches,
not only departments with encyclopedias, dictionaries etc. but even a
broad selection of monographies (and of course all the e-stuff). Is
this a tradition which is kept alive as libraries today rethink,
reorganise and build new premises?
