And if you think you ought to know a little something about all this so you don't seem ignorant and you just want a brief, readable, and pretty rational and fair overview, you could do a lot worse than "Books: A Plan to Scan" in the Financial Times of 12 August.

There's a link in the article to an equally good overview on the reaction to the settlement among European book publishers. Some of the virulent language there wouldn't be out of place at a town meeting on health care.
