JOB DESCRIPTION:
This position is for a Technical Professional Application Support
Engineer Level 1 to support of Business Information Systems (BIS) or the
Information Management System (IMS).  The application support engineer
designs, develops, and configures application system setting and
options, which may include customizing screens by adding, moving, and
deleting fields, adding or modifying logic, data and database changes,
and installing patches or upgrades. Performs change and configuration
management work processes. Works within a team to document system
design, develops and executes test plans. Develops end-user
documentation and may train users in conversion and implementation of
system. Is responsible to resolve information system issues that appear
in the environment and ensures issues are resolved.

This position requires considerable use of computer workstation
equipment (keyboard, mouse, VDT). Occasional weekend or evening work may
be required to meet deadlines, install or test new systems, or respond
to system problems.

This position will provide primary support for Hanford Technical Library
and DOE Public Reading Room systems and applications including, but not
limited to Horizon, WebReporter, SFX, Ariel, WebTrends, OCLC products,
and Docuwiki. 

ABOUT THE LIBRARY:
The Hanford Technical Library (HTL), with a staff of 21, is part of the
Information Management Services organization at the Pacific Northwest
National Laboratory. Other groups in this organization are Business
Information Systems, Records Management Services, and the IT
Infrastructure and Services Division. The HTL provides information
resources and services to the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory;
Department of Energy (DOE) offices located in Richland, WA, and the
prime contractors on the Hanford Site. The HTL subscribes to more than
9000 electronic journals, over 10,000 ebooks, and dozens of databases.
The library staff actively supports multi-disciplinary science and
technology through PNNL- and site-wide delivery of resources to its
customers; primary access to resources is through Horizon, the library's
integrated library system, and the library's website. The DOE Public
Reading Room operates within the HTL; both are co-located with
Washington State University's Tri-Cities Max Benitz Library on the WSU
T-C campus.

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory's Hanford Technical Library is

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
The position requires a Bachelor degree in Computer Science, Management
Information Systems, or a related field, and 1-2 years of experience in
the support of information systems using modern database management
technologies and software development methodologies.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Knowledge in software development methodologies, design and
implementations.
- Knowledge and experience programming using the Visual Studio .NET
development environment.
- Knowledge and experience with scripting tools such as Perl, Python and
Visual Basic.
- Knowledge of relational database applications and SQL Query language.
- Understanding of computer science tools, methods, platforms and
operating systems.
- Understanding of both client server and n-tier web deployment.
- Foundational understanding of the software lifecycle and software
engineering practices, including specification, documentation and
quality assurance.
- Strong analytical, problem solving skills, and time management skills.
The ability to troubleshoot and remedy problems under pressing deadlines
is essential.
- The ability to communicate verbally and written, with both IT and
non-IT staff.
- Understanding and experience with Object Oriented Programming concepts
- Good teamwork skills, ability to collaborate with other technical
staff on the project

It is desired that the individual possess
- Unix/Linux skills
- An understanding of and experience with library sciences and library
applications such as Horizon, SFX, Ariel, OCLC, etc.
