***Web Technical Professional* *Syracuse University Library * ***Position
Summary:*
The Web Technical Professional works both independently and collaboratively
to provide highly specialized expertise in the design, implementation, and
evaluation of current and future web interfaces and technologies (Website,
OPAC, Digital Collections, Federated Searching, Web 2.0, RSS Feeds, etc.)
that provide user access to the Library's resources and services. Organizes
Web projects and manages direct and indirect resources related to those
projects. Collaborates and leads discussion with library staff, committees,
groups, and departments regarding website and application interface
functionality. Leads decision-making on new software and technological
solutions to Web presentation and delivery. Provides leadership on website
policy and technical standards and adherence to those standards/policies.
Develops a strategic direction for the Library Web environment and
implements changes as necessary. Creates a supportive, collaborative
atmosphere and works with Library administration and management to establish
task lists, policies and procedures, priorities, and timelines. Reports to
the Associate University Librarian for Digital Programs and Systems.
*Responsibilities:*
· Works at the highest technical level in serving as primary
administrator for Web and Interface applications and technologies providing
technical expertise and leadership in its maintenance and development **
· Identifies and manages resources for Web and interface application
development projects by formulating project plans, establishing and
maintaining timelines, communicating to stakeholders and tracking progress *

· Manages large-scale web and interface application development
projects that are at the heart of the Library's strategic directions **
· Directly supervises technical staff responsible for web/interface
application development**
· Assembles, communicates, directs and manages the technical aspect
of a Web environment. Identifies the technical infrastructure support
required to accomplish user interface related goals **
· Prepares extensive cost studies concerning the acquisition and
implementation of new technologies and approaches to the Web/User Interface
maintenance and presentation **
· Investigates and assesses new standards, technologies, solutions
(including open source) and trends for possible implementation **
· Provides leadership in the integration of the Library's technical
services expertise into the Web/User Interface presentation of Library
resources, and with Library administration to establish priorities for core
collections and database contents **
· Develops priorities for organization-wide Web/User Interface needs
through creating relationships with and seeking input from Library groups,
information technology staff and Library Administration **
· Ensures website cross-platform and cross-browser compatibility
enabling access from a variety of technical environments and providing
suitable access by individuals with disabilities **
· Coordinates and participates in testing and usability sessions of
website interfaces by various campus user populations such as faculty,
students, staff, and persons with disabilities **
· Periodically serves as back-up programmer for updating Website
content and functionality **
· Participates in the Strategic Management Group and represents
Web/User Interface development to senior management **
· Provides or assigns staff to provide technical assistance and
training for Library Web content developers and unit staff **
· Represents the Library in local, state and national professional
organizations **
· Maintains technical and project management expertise through
attendance at conferences and exhibitions directly related to the
professional responsibilities of this position **
· Performs other duties as assigned **

*Required Qualifications:*
· Bachelor's degree in information technology or a closely related
field plus 6 years of progressively responsible experience in web
development and web project management or a Master's degree plus 3 years of
relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
· Experience organizing and tracking web development project details
*Preferred:*
· Experience managing large scale website development projects.
Familiarity with Web Consortium (W3C) standards and protocols for data
transmission used in digital libraries. Familiarity with website design and
programming guidelines for accessibility to people with disabilities.
