TITLE: Creating the Future of the Catalog and Cataloging

ALA Annual Conference
Sunday, June 29, 2008 from 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon
Anaheim Convention Center, Rm. 204B

Sponsored by ALCTS CCS; co-sponsored by LITA Next Generation Catalog Interest Group and the ALCTS Networked Resources and Metadata Interest Group

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

This program explores the connections between the promise of next generation catalogs, the potential of global information networks, and what catalogers are doing "on the ground." How can catalogers and other metadata creators use tools such as WorldCat Local, the eXtensible Catalog, the Resource Description Framework (RDF), LibraryThing, and concepts/features such as faceted browsing, ambient findability, social tagging, web searching, etc., to create valuable services for information users?

Five expert panelists and a distinguished moderator (see bios below) will discuss and debate these and other issues that affect all of us involved in cataloging, metadata, and indeed knowledge management in general.

MODERATOR

* Robert Wolven (Columbia University)

PANELISTS

* Roy Tennant (OCLC). "Library Catalogs at the Network Level"

* Jennifer Bowen. (University of Rochester). "'eXtensible Cataloging': Opportunities presented by the eXtensible Catalog (XC) Project"

* Martha Yee (UCLA). "What I have Found Out from an Attempt to Build an RDF Model of FRBR-ized Cataloging Rules

* Tim Spalding (LibraryThing). "UGC: The Next Sharp Stick?"

* Diane Hillmann (Information Institute of Syracuse). "A Has-Been Cataloger Looks at What Cataloging Will Be".
