Full-time Immediate Opening – User Services Advisor
UBC Campus – Vancouver

The University of British Columbia Library is one of the largest research libraries in Canada with 
more than 15 locations on and off campus including UBC Okanagan Library. Our collections are large 
and diverse and include:  5.4 million volumes, 5.2 million microforms, over 808,000 maps, audio, 
video and graphic materials and nearly 56,000 serial subscriptions.   More than 300 full and 
part-time faculty and staff at UBC Library serve not only faculty, staff and students at UBC but 
also the broader community of BC.

The Library's online services and electronic resources complement the more traditional formats and 
are growing tremendously. Many Library services can now be accessed online and thousands of 
full-text e-journals, e-books, indexes and databases are available.

UBC Library’s Information Systems & Technology Division provides a range of computer systems and 
applications development and support in the areas of:  library cataloguing, scholarly 
communications, electronic publishing, institutional repositories, resource discovery, web content 
management and various types of digital collections.   These applications, many of which are on the 
cutting edge of academic library technology, are based on a broad and rapidly changing range of 
local, commercial and open source software.

We are currently recruiting for a User Services Advisor to join the division.  This position 
provides troubleshooting, maintenance and consulting support to students, faculty, staff and public 
patrons on all aspects of computer systems and related equipment, software and communications 
networks.   Major responsibilities include:

•	providing troubleshooting and consulting support from a help desk by phone, email and in person 
on the use of online library systems, pc’s, peripheral equipment, software problems and 
communications network problems;
•	diagnosing hardware, software and other system problems;
•	consulting with library staff to identify software, equipment and network requirements;
•	evaluating and developing specifications for new hardware and software;
•	installing, configuring and supporting a variety of systems hardware and software;
•	providing ongoing operational support for all automated systems in use at the UBC Library;
•	performing regular production and backup activities for all automated systems;
•	assisting staff in installing productivity and calendaring software, including PDA support;
•	investigating new technologies and tools for use as part of the UBC Library’s information 
technology infrastructure;
•	training and assisting library staff in set-up and operation of pc, laptops, hardware, software, 
and other peripheral equipment;
•	maintaining and revising documentation for installation and procedures;
•	administering user id and passwords for online systems; and
•	performing other related duties.

The successful candidate will have:
-	University degree in Computing Science with a minimum of two years relevant experience with an 
emphasis on workstation maintenance and support or an equivalent combination of education and 
experience.
-	Knowledge of major operating systems such as Windows 9x/NT/2000/XP/2003, Unix (including Solaris, 
Linux) and TCP/IP networking and common programming/scripting languages such as C++, Kixtart and Perl.
-	Effective written and oral communication skills, interpersonal, analytical and organizational 
skills.
-	Ability to analyze problems and develop timely and appropriate solutions.
-	Ability to work both independently and within a team environment.
-	Ability to adapt to changing priorities, manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
-	Ability to keep current with developments and trends in information technology.

Other experience that would be considered an asset to the successful candidate include:
-	Formal training or an IT certification.
-	A+ hardware certification.
-	Experience in Libraries and/or automated library systems (Voyager, ExLibris SFX, Relais ILL).

Compensation:

Annual salary range is $45,477 - $55,593 (commensurate with experience) and a full range of benefits 
are offered including dental and extended health plans, vacation starting at four weeks, a staff 
pension plan and a tuition fee benefit program.
