I think there are significant differences, too, in how the people use
public libraries, vs how students use academic libraries.

I would argue, too, that the catalog is not the best place to implement
'social' features. For any academic library, it holds only a small
fraction of what users are looking for.
It would be significantly better, in my opinion, to offer a system that
allows people to save/organize/share records from all of the library's
databases, not just the one that searches items physically in the
library.
