           ****Apologies for cross-postings****

Dear Colleague,

VALA is pleased to announce that Stuart Weibel, from OCLC, will be a
keynote speaker for the VALA2008 Conference that starts in less than two
weeks. Unfortunately, Michael Casey has been obliged to cancel, owing to
serious family illness.

Stuart is Senior Research Scientist, OCLC Programs and Research, USA.
His current interests include the impact of social networking on library
services and the increasing importance of canonical, globally-scoped
persistent identifiers as anchors for library assets on the Web. To find
out more, go to our Website at
http://www.vala.org.au/vala2008/keyn2008.htm.

To accommodate this change, there have therefore been some alterations
to our programme. The opening plenary session, at 0900 on Tuesday 5
February, will now be presented by Andy Powell, whose presentation is
entitled Repositories through the looking glass (abstract at
http://www.vala.org.au/vala2008/abst2008.htm#plen1). Stuart Weibel will
present his keynote, entitled Making identifiers concrete (so library
places and spaces don't have to be) (abstract at
http://www.vala.org.au/vala2008/abst2008.htm#plen6), at the closing
plenary session, at 1540 on Thursday 7 February.

VALA is very grateful to Stuart Weibel for agreeing to step in at
extremely short notice, and also thanks OCLC for their help with this.
Stuart will also be presenting the paper by Robin Murray in Concurrent
Session 12 on the morning of Thursday 7 February. Thank you, Stuart.

VALA is also pleased to advise that Emily Hudson, from Melbourne
University, will be presenting a paper entitled Australia's new flexible
copyright exception: open-ended in name only? (see her abstract at
http://www.vala.org.au/vala2008/abst2008.htm#consess8c) in concurrent
Session 8 at 1510 on Wednesday 6 February. Emily is currently working
on a PhD in this field, so her research is up to the minute. Thank you,
Emily.

Please feel free to pass this message on to your colleagues.

We look forward to seeing you at VALA2008.
