Library Associates Companies (LAC) seeks candidates for the position of
Metadata / Digital Collection Librarian to work at the NASA Goddard
Space Flight Center Library. This position is located in Washington DC.
Overview of Position
Our ideal candidate is a motivated, energetic individual who will fill a
full-time position as Metadata / Digital Collection Librarian ("Metadata
Librarian"). The Metadata Librarian is responsible for collecting,
preserving, and presenting digital information in all formats, applying
indexing terms and metadata, and maintaining the Library's bibliographic
and archival databases. This includes metadata application, authority
control, quality control, and other duties associated with the creation
and maintenance of item- and collection-level data for a variety of
print and digital materials.
As a member of the Electronic Library Systems Team, the Metadata
Librarian reports to the Team Lead and works independently as well as
with teammates, Library colleagues, Library users/patrons, and community
partners to develop and provide access to information and materials that
support the scientific and engineering research and public outreach
needs of the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center.
Primary Responsibilities
* Perform original and copy cataloging for a wide range of
formats, including serials, non-print materials, and e-resources, using
traditional cataloging principles and practices to input records into
OCLC and the local ILS, SirsiDynix Unicorn
* Stay abreast of new developments relevant to metadata,
cataloging, and digitization
* Serve as a resource person concerning OCLC, cataloging,
classification, database maintenance, record loading, and workflow
issues
* Archive digital images, video files, audio files, multimedia
assets and assets in other formats
* Assure the quality of archived material and databases
* Plan and coordinate digitization projects
* Employ emerging metadata schemas to make Library resources
available to our patrons
* Maintain statistics and produces monthly reports.
Qualifications
1. Master's degree in library/information science, or archives
administration, or other relevant field from an accredited program.
2. Minimum of one year experience cataloging book and non-book
formats in an automated environment using OCLC and an ILS, such as
SirsiDynix Unicorn.
3. Knowledge of electronic and traditional cataloging standards
(AACR2R, LC classification, LCSH, MARC formats) and emerging cataloging
standards, such as Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records
(FRBR <http://www.loc.gov/cds/FRBR.html> ).
4. Experience with relevant thesauri or ontologies and one or more
metadata schemas or tools (OAI <http://www.openarchives.org/> /PMH
<http://www.openarchives.org/OAI/2.0/openarchivesprotocol.htm> , XML,
Dublin Core <http://dublincore.org/> , MODS
<http://www.loc.gov/standards/mods/> , METS
<http://www.loc.gov/standards/mets/> , EAD, etc.).
5. Demonstrated knowledge of file formats, media/data migration,
metadata, database management, and digitization techniques.
6. Knowledge and recent experience with digital-asset-management
(DAM) initiatives and repositories, such as DSpace

7. Ability to manage multiple responsibilities in a dynamic and
changing environment.
8. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively both orally and
in writing.
