[Web4lib] Reader Rabbit and administrator rights

Phalbe,
I have recently seen good comments about Virtual Drive from FarStone
Technology. It's for just this kind of use.

One word of caution though: when I last worked on kids' CDs on a public
computer (about 8 years ago) there were some that would work in a
virtual drive, and others that wouldn't. There was no sort of
consistency about it - some from one publisher would work, others from
the same house wouldn't. Even within a series, like Curious George, some
would and some wouldn't. If the ones you have fall in to the "won't"
category, you may have to negotiate with the donors to see if they can
be swapped for something else. Or, they may all work now (it was 8 years
ago!)

Subject: [Web4lib] Reader Rabbit and administrator rights

Folks,

This is slightly off-topic. It's not about the web, but it is about
computers and software:

We have purchased many copies of Reader Rabbit and thought we'd be
able to install the two CD's onto the hard drive of our public
computers. An eleemosynary organization paid for these, so this has
become a ticklish problem.

Our new IT person, who has never done IT in a library before, says
that kids will have to borrow the CD's from a service desk and put
them in the CD drives each time they want to use the program.
Otherwise, we'd have to give them administrator rights to the computer.

Is this really, really correct? Is there no other way children can
log in and use the program on the hard drive???

Thanks.
