>From a previous post about XML:
"Using XML for something like a spreadsheet would quickly lead to most
of the document being markup and not data."
This sentence prompts me to point out what seems like the extravagant
mark-up of my public library's OPAC, and perhaps OPACs in general.

We have the following. (I arrived at this record by doing a title
keyword search for: debating good society. The html, which triples
the number of characters, serves to highlight my keywords.) :

The book title, author's name and each of the subject headings are
link text and I understand that the links themselves will require
additional characters, but 5,784 additional characters??
Would it be fair to say that economizing on the number of characters
was not a major consideration in designing this system? Maybe it
wouldn't be fair, or maybe it's not important - I don't know.
It just seems like the OPAC would respond more quickly if these file
sizes could be cut substantially.
