I agree strongly to keep the bit rate down as low as you can, a
speaking voice can be very compressed before you notice any loss in quality.
Additionally Audacity is an excellent free OSS audio editor, which
can come in handy for trimming and breaking down lectures etc into a
more manageable size: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
