UPenn has a page you might want to look at.

It takes advantage of the the fact that you can feed your AIM username
to the AOL server and, depending on your online status, return one of
two different status icons. E.G.,

Presumably, the librarians at UPenn use Trillian or similar so they
can monitor accounts on multiple IM networks.
