Robin,
Welcome to the brave new world of public library networking. We blew
past our capacity on our 2 T-1s sometime in 2006. We upgraded to a 10
Mbps OPT-E-MAN connection to accommodate the demand from staff and
public accessing online audio, video, downloadable audio books, YouTube,
MySpace, Runescape, etc.

I've told people that I expect that we'll eventually max out our 10 Mbps
although right now we're peaking around 5 Mbps. At a conference I
recently attended, Bill Norton of Equinix predicted that by 2010, 80 to
90 percent of all Internet bandwidth would be used by video-based
traffic. Imagine what that will do to your bandwidth. He also predicted
that at some point, consumer and business demand will drive fiber over
"the last mile" so that home users would see bandwidth capacity unheard
of at this time in the consumer market.
I know that many of us are trying to manage bandwidth by blocking or
limiting traffic to sites like MySpace but we decided that for a library
our size (80+ public computers and 40+ staff computers and public
wireless network at 2 locations), there was no way to manage our way on
2 T-1s. I've always told people, patrons will always seek to maximize
their bandwidth. If you have it, they'll use it to explore online audio,
video, etc. We're just trying to stay one step ahead of them in the
bandwidth chase.
