Exciting opportunity to help build a new and dynamic program in digital
collections and research at the largest university library system in the
Washington DC-Baltimore area. The UM Libraries serve the College Park

RESPONSIBILITIES: The Interface Specialist supports the library's newly
developed digital repository and works as part of a team in the Office of
Digital Collections and Research. Members of this team include
librarians, curators, archivists, and IT staff. The Interface Specialist
will participate in and support digital library projects through
management of the design, development, and maintenance of public and
administrative web interfaces in a cross-platform environment. Duties
include the development of dynamic web pages using PHP, JSP, or
JavaScript, and the development, implementation, and redesign of
interfaces for digital library collections and administrative access. The
Interface Specialist will also implement innovative design solutions based
on end user requirements and system architecture.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE: A Bachelor's degree plus two years of
relevant experience working with web-based design; or an MLS or an MA in
graphic design. Expertise in one or more scripting languages (e.g., PHP,
Perl, JavaScript); ability to hand code markup (HTML, CSS); experience
using design software and editing of graphics (e.g., Photoshop,
Dreamweaver, Flash), demonstrated ability to design database driven
websites.
Preferred:
Experience in database-driven web development within a library or
educational setting; ability to hand code XML and XSLT; experience in a
UNIX environment; knowledge of meta information standards in a digital
library environment; knowledge of data standards and authorities;
experience in establishing and managing blogs and wikis; familiarity with
accessible design concepts and Section 508 standards for sound web design,
functionality and interactivity.
