There is also a way to do this in JavaScript where you read the height of
the center-column on page load, and then you use JS to set the style height
for the left-column. This should work as well, but it feels a little hacky
to me.

You could also try borrowing some techniques from this article. It's
solving a slightly different problem, but some of the techniques would be
the same.
