*The Read/Write Web: Social Software and Libraries*
Course Description: The web continues to evolve, and whether you call it
the read/write web, web 2.0, or web-as-platform -- it is increasingly
interactive, collaborative, and driven by user needs. However, the buzz
words are not as important as the profound changes in communication that
they are attempting to describe. In this four week online course, we
will explore social software and the implications of the read/write web
for libraries. This will be done through a combination of readings,
discussion, and hands-on exercises. The main topics covered will include:

    * What is the Read/Write Web and why is it important?
    * Blogs
    * RSS feeds
    * Social bookmarking and tagging
    * Getting buy-in and support for social software at your library

For each topic, the exploration will include:

    * Explanation and exposure to concepts and tools
    * Hands-on practice with the tools
    * Discussion and practical planning

Participants will need a computer with internet access and the ability
to download and try out various free software tools.
