ADULT SERVICES MANAGER

CHARLES E. BEATLEY, JR. CENTRAL LIBRARY

LIBRARIAN III
 

The Adult Services Manager is responsible for operations of the Central 
Library Adult Services Section including units for system wide 
Interlibrary Loan Service and Sunday Service for the Central Library.  
Under the supervision of the Central Library Manager, this position is 
evaluated using work performance factors, progress reports and 
completion of goals.

Management Duties:

Directs and coordinates the activities of the Adult Services Section by 
formulating goals, plans, procedures, priorities, and schedules.

.                     Supervises two Librarian II positions and five 
Librarian I positions.  The Adult Services Section has 25 employees with 
an FTE of 10.5.

.                     Interviews, selects, trains, evaluates, counsels 
and disciplines staff.

.                     Reviews and submits Kronos time records for the 
Adult Service staff.

.                     Submits monthly and annual reference reports to 
the Central Library Manager.

.                     Works with other library divisions and sections to 
improve operations of reference services, Interlibrary Loans, Sunday 
Service and reference computer services.

.                     Chairs the Reference Committee.

.                     Acts as the Building Manager in the absence of the 
Central Library Manager.

 

Collection Development Duties:

.                     Selects and evaluates the Central Library 
reference collection with input from staff.

.                     Reviews professional literature for books and 
other library materials appropriate to the Central Library circulation 
collection.

.                     Assigns the selection of adult materials, weeding 
and inventory to reference staff.

.                     Evaluates electronic databases for the library 
with the Reference Committee.

Public Service Duties:
Answers reference queries using traditional and electronic reference 
resources.

.                     Instructs patrons on the use of online and print 
resources available in the library.

.                     Interprets library policies and procedures for 
patrons and resolves complaints.

.                     Gives library tours to community, educational and 
professional groups.

Other Duties:
Checks on the maintenance of reference equipment and calls for service.

.                     Reports problems with online electronic services, 
catalog, word processors and Internet service to Automation or Technical 
Services.

.                     Reports building problems to the Central Library 
Manager.

.                     Acts as backup for meeting room requests.

Other duties as assigned.

Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:  

Thorough knowledge of professional library principles, methods, 
materials and practices especially as they relate to the field of 
specialization; thorough professional knowledge of books, periodicals, 
pamphlet materials, library guides and publications; electronic 
databases and online library systems; demonstrated ability to analyze 
professional and administrative problems, to make recommendations, and 
take appropriate action in their solution; ability to supervise and 
train professional and paraprofessional subordinates in the various 
activities of a major section of the library; ability to interpret 
library policies, objectives and facilities to community groups, public 
officials, business and education leaders and the general public, and to 
establish and maintain effective public relations.


Minimum Requirements:  Master's degree in Library Science from an 
accredited ALA library school; extensive experience in professional 
library work, including one year experience at the level of  a Librarian 
II; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which 
provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Additional Requirements: Applicant must possess or obtain a license to 
practice as a registered professional librarian issued by the 
Commonwealth of Virginia . 

Salary:   $49,049.50 - $54,501.98 depending on qualifications.
