[Web4lib] Thin Client Opinions

Thin clients for Internet only workstations has worked well for us.

We have been using a Windows Terminal server that serves 60+ thin
clients for our Internet only workstations since 2000. Since
implementing this system we have had 99% up time with very little
maintenance on our part. All maintenance is done on the server and we
rarely need to touch the thin clients. In the 7 years we have had this
system in place our support for the 60+ computers has gone from several
hours a week to an hour or two a month, and aside from a couple of thin
clients having a hardware issue we have not had to replace any of the
thin clients because of obsolescence. We were on a 3 year replacement
cycle for the "normal" computers we had in place, so we have not only
saved on support costs but also hardware costs.

The only complaint we have had is when a patron visits a heavily
animated web site, the thin client screen seems to blink as each frame
is drawn and sent to the thin client.

If you want the full details please feel free to email me direct.

Userful has a product out there that is supposed to run 10 heads from
one tower. I don't have any experience with it, but it does look
interesting.
