Systems Librarian
The WMU Libraries seek an energetic, creative and service-oriented
Systems Librarian to manage the Endeavor Voyager integrated library
system (ILS) server and client software as well as related
applications that facilitate access to library content and services.
Reporting to the Director of Systems, the Systems Librarian will
work collegially with Libraries and university IT personnel to
ensure proper ILS operation, function, integration, maintenance and
upgrades, data import/export, and reporting to help fulfill the
Libraries' vision, mission, and goals. As a faculty member, the
successful candidate for this position will have numerous and
significant opportunities to collaboratively explore, develop, and
apply methods of advancing library practice and information access.
Responsibilities
- Administer the Libraries' ILS (server application), and related
applications such as media scheduling and selected digital content
platforms
- Serve as primary support for ILS application (i.e. server-based)
issues and troubleshooting
- Serve as primary support for ILS client issues for public and
technical services personnel (may include some training
responsibilities)
- Document ILS client and server operations and procedures as needed
- Work with all appropriate Libraries personnel to identify,
prioritize and carry out needed ILS modifications and improvements,
as part of the Libraries Technology group planning, project, and
workflow processes
- Diagnose, analyze, and solve or work around ILS- and allied
systems-related problems
- Serve as primary point of contact between University Libraries and
ILS and other vendor technical support group as needed
- Participate in statewide, regional, and national discussions of
ILS issues, problems, and solutions
- Research, present, and publish on library topics not limited to
the above
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
- Master's degree from an ALA-accredited program in library or
information science, or comparable degree (i.e. in Computer Science)
and commitment to obtaining an ALA-accredited degree
- Professional library systems or other mission-critical application
administration and/or programming experience, preferably in an
academic library
- Demonstrated ability to think critically, analyze problems, and
develop and implement creative solutions
- Demonstrated ability to balance taking direction, and
independently managing tasks and projects in a rapidly changing
environment
- Demonstrated aptitude for analytical and detailed work
- Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and oral and written
communication skills
- Experience using and/or administering client-server relational
database systems (e.g. Oracle, MySQL, and PostgreSQL)
- Commitment to professional development and the ability to meet the
requirements of tenure and promotion as a faculty member
Desired
- Exposure to international library standards (e.g. AACR2 or RDA,
MARC, NCIP, Dublin Core, Z39.50 or SRU/W, etc.)
- Experience with Endeavor's Voyager ILS
- Experience designing training materials and providing individual
or group instruction and demonstration
- Experience with UNIX operating system structure and shell commands
- Experience with Web page/site creation and editing, including
familiarity with various coding and scripting languages, e.g. HTML,
XML, and JavaScript
- Knowledge of programming languages such as Perl or Java
APPOINTMENT AND COMPENSATION: Full-time twelve month tenure-track
appointment. Faculty rank, status, privileges, and responsibilities.
Minimum: $47,875 for Assistant Professor plus generous benefits.
Salary, rank and tenure status commensurate with qualifications and
experience.
