R: [Web4lib] Lack of discussion of Google CSE and Libraries

Although I agree with John that the CSE (as most are using it) is little
more than a good interface for the "site:" operator, most are not making
full use yet of the marker functions.

These marker functions (http://www.google.com/coop/cse/marker) accomplish
two things. First, they can make for faceted search results. Second, they
motivate users to annotate the web for Google.

These two things are definitely worth blogging about. The first because
custom faceted search results could be enormously useful within a specific
discipline (especially for academic, medical, and special libraries). The
second because perhaps libraryfolk should consider carefully the benefits
and potential problems of gifting google the expert annotation of web
resources.

Dean Giustini has some interesting posts on Google Co-Op and "Google health"
relating to this that were written before the CSEs were announced by Google:

http://weblogs.elearning.ubc.ca/cgi-bin/mt-search.cgi?IncludeBlogs=161&search=co-op

It has been my impression that the Google CSE was created largely as a
motivator for users to annotate the web for Google- and I have been
surprised to see little discussion on this point in the biblioblogosphere.

Best,

-David
