Director, Library Information Systems and Technology

San Diego State University Library and Information Access invites 
nominations and applications for the position of Director, Library 
Information Systems and Technology.  The successful candidate will work 
closely with librarians and computing professionals to guide library 
technology services in the 21st century.  The successful candidate must 
have a strong technical background with a passion for leading and 
communicating a shared vision throughout a university computing 
environment. The successful candidate must demonstrate a command of 
emerging trends in academic libraries, information technology and scholarly 
communication while working collaboratively in a collegial environment 
which encourages innovation.

The framework of this position is one of dynamic change. The SDSU Library 
and Information Access is involved in a planning process to implement our 
updated strategic vision. Ongoing projects that involve information 
technology resources include deploying technology to support student 
learning outcomes; charting our course in the emerging world of digital 
resources and collections; marketing and providing access to Library 
electronic services; and developing technology strategies as we enhance and

RESPONSIBILITIES:  The Director of Library Information Systems and 
Technology reports directly to the Associate Dean.  Successful candidate 
leads a team of 19 professionals who develop and deliver innovative 
information technology services for teaching, learning and research.  The 
director:
    * Manages the development of services and programs that integrate 
information technology and resources in support of Library and Information 
Access and the teaching and learning mission of the university.
    * Coordinates the planning, implementation and operational support of 
the computer hardware, software, and networks dedicated to the library's 
service and administrative functions.
    * Provides day-to-day management and strategic planning of the library 
computing environment.
    * Leads a student computing lab with 350 public access computers and a 
separate multimedia center.
    * Coordinates and prioritizes California State University (CSU) 
system-wide initiatives with local resources.
    * Participates in library-wide projects, campus-wide activities, and 
represents the department in collaborative campus and community (local, 
state, and national) activities concerning library information systems and 
technology.
    * In concert with key individuals from the library, university and the 
California State University system explores innovative applications of 
emerging information technologies that enhance and expand library services 
and increase employee productivity.
  QUALIFICATIONS
Required
    * Demonstrated ability and experience to plan, manage and oversee 
complex projects in a team environment, meet deadlines, and to prioritize 
work in alignment with the service goals of the university and the department;
    * Demonstrated ability to motivate, lead and mentor staff;
    * Record of commitment to staff development;
    * Five years supervisory experience; progressively responsible 
information technology and systems management experience;
    * Demonstrated skill managing in an IT environment of publicly 
accessible workstations;
    * Knowledge of information technology security issues;
    * Demonstrated strong service orientation;
    * Experience developing successful collaborative partnerships;
    * BA or BS or an equivalent combination of relevant education, 
certification, experience and training;
    * Excellent oral and written communication skills;
    * Ability to work with diverse groups with competing interests;
    * Extensive knowledge of trends in academic and library computing 
fields to advance the delivery of teaching, learning, and scholarship;
    * Experience with and understanding of the challenges of working in a 
mixed platform environment (e.g., PC/Windows, Macintosh/OS X, UNIX/Solaris, 
and Novell);
    * Experience with a broad range of software products;
    * Knowledge and basic understanding of higher level languages relevant 
to developing Web applications (e.g., Cold Fusion, C, PERL, PHP, Java, and 
other related programming languages);
    * Knowledge and basic understanding of information protocols and 
metadata standards and markup languages (for instance: Open URL, Z39.50, 
TEI, FGDC, XSL/XSLT, HTML, SGML); and
    * Background knowledge of installation, management and maintenance of 
UNIX-based systems.
  Preferred
    * Experience in library or academic computing, preferably in a large 
university or research institution;
    * Experience working with learning management and multimedia systems;
    * American Library Association accredited master’s degree or equivalent 
foreign degree;
    * Knowledge of and experience with digital library technologies and the 
role of research libraries in the global network of information resources;
    * Experience with Innovative Interfaces integrated library system; and
    * Grant writing experience.
This is a full-time, twelve-month, management position at the rank of 
Administrator II.  Salary will be commensurate with experience up to

The San Diego State University Library and Information Access is both a 
library and home to the largest computing lab on campus, as well as a 
24-hour study commons and computing lab. The glass dome architecture of the 
10-year old addition to the library building is a campus landmark, where we 
regularly sponsor lectures and author readings for the campus and larger 
community. We provide a collection of over 6.4 million items, including a 
growing collection of electronic serials and books in excess of 12,500 
titles. The library employs 90 faculty and staff, as well as 186 student 
assistants. As a Library, we are committed to regularly renewing our

variety and the appropriate use of technology to support the learning
