Reading the article that Kevin Cullen referred to in his post, I was 
struck by the thought that it might not be "line length" per se but the 
arc of eye movement that was important. This would mean that the most 
efficient line length would be governed - in part - by distance of the 
eye from the text, as opposed to a fixed figure such as 3.5 inches, or 
what ever.

Just a thought.
