The California Digital Library (CDL), a collaborative effort of the
ten campuses of the University of California, supports the assembly
and creative use of the world's scholarship and knowledge for the UC
libraries and the communities they serve.
Reporting jointly to the Director, UC Press, and the Director,
Publishing and Strategic Initiatives, Office of Scholarly
Communication, California Digital Library (CDL), the Manager of
Publishing Support Services will develop the digital products and
operational infrastructure necessary for joint publishing projects of
UCP and CDL, including digital scholarly editions and the
collaborative Mark Twain Digital Project. The Manager will build on
the service and technology infrastructure available at the CDL, and
work to develop economically sustainable means of publishing
scholarly work in conjunction with the UC Press. The Manager will
work to extend the work of the eScholarship program, especially its
mature publishing services, the eScholarship Editions and the
eScholarship Repository.
Job Requirements
Advanced academic preparation from college (in a field based at least
in part on original research) and six years relevant experience
(including work in an academic library or related scholarly
publishing enterprise); or an equivalent combination of education and
experience.
Working knowledge of scholars’ communication needs, interests, and
preferred practices across a range of academic disciplines;
technology-driven practices; standards and protocols in digital
publishing; and costs and benefits associated with different
publishing models.
Working knowledge and experience of usability and user-centered
design principles; ability to work through and bring clarity to
complex service design issues; ability to present clearly articulated
solutions to design problems
Demonstrated understanding of or ability to quickly learn the issues
and concerns specific to text-based, scholarly, academic research web
sites.
Ability to work closely with programmers to implement sound
information design principles, and to brainstorm solutions to
difficult user interface design issues.
Strong grounding in technology issues and understanding of back-end
development processes, issues, and solutions; ability to negotiate
technical issues with developers.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including ability
to work effectively with and build community among diverse
constituencies, to produce clear and thorough documentation, and to
work effectively in a collaborative team environment.
Demonstrated success and experience in project management and
communication; ability to multi-task and to manage multiple projects
simultaneously
