[Web4lib] RE: More on the Open Content Alliance

Why is the assumption that the content would be locked up in either
place (Google or UM)? Once it's online, will other search engines be
prevented from coming along to index it?
It also might be good to get past the notion that it's a bad thing that
Google is in this, whether in whole or in part, for the money. If it
wasn't for the money then the progress in digital initiatives at these
libraries, and in competing/related projects like OCA, would be a lot
slower in coming. And if we don't think that Yahoo's participation in
OCA isn't at least partially motivated by potential profits and the need
to compete with Google, then we've been breathing a little too much dust
from those volumes that are being brushed off before they go into the
scanners...

If Roy gets to belabor, so do I. I obviously didn't intend to imply that
U.
Michigan's books would in anyway become Google's upon scanning. I am
trying
to point out that if U. Michigan has a website that allows acces to the
their scanned books and Google has an interface that allows access to
their
scanned books and the books of other universities I don't foresee many
people using U. Michigan's website to search their (U. Michigan's)
scanned
books.

Not to belabor this, but a final clarification of my intent since I
phrased
it poorly. Perry is correct, that to see the public domain material from
the
University of Michigan we won't need to go through Google. But I was
trying
to speak more about Google's intent. If Google truly wanted only the
public
good, then there would be no reason to be secretive -- in fact there
would
be some very good reasons to be completely open about how they are
accomplishing this technical feat. But Google wants content to get
eyeballs,
and therefore more advertising revenue. Therefore, they have little or
no
interest in making information about how they are doing things available
to
the rest of us. This has nothing to do with the University of Michigan,
but
it has a great deal to do with Google.
