[Web4lib] Google is replacing the professional librarian

Interesting column by Ruth Holladay in yesterday's (October 25)
Indianapolis Star. It mostly deals with local issues surrounding the
Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library budget and the new central
library building. Mostly stuff of local interest.

But I thought the following paragraph was interesting. It's a statement
(not a direct quote) attributed to Linda Mielke, library director/CEO:

"Mielke has expressed similar philosophical concerns. Google is
replacing the professional librarian, she has said. Libraries must stock
best-selling books and DVDs to keep pace."

Google is replacing the professional librarian?
