You may want to check to see that you only have one version of FF installed on your system. Especially if you've been using it since before version 1.0.
I never had a problem with Web Developer but did have my FF "fry" once in a similar manner.
After much confusion and poking around I discovered that, for some reason, when I'd updated my pre 1.0 versions, the computer kept the previous versions and installed another - so that I'd accumulated multiple version on my system. I can't explain why, but removing the old versions fixed the problem. Since 1.0 I haven't had this problem.

Subject: [Web4lib] Re: Top 15 Firefox Extensions
Has anyone experienced major problems with the Web Developer Toolbar?
I loaded it Tuesday, loved it, but Wednesday on booting my computer
my Firefox was fried - all toolbars missing and menu bar inactive.
Adding this extension was the only change I have made recently to my
computer. I know there could be many reasons for my problem, but
looking for any experiences like mine....and I really want to reload
this extension!
I am systematically bringing back pieces of my "fried" Firefox
profile to see if this extension was it.
