Accessible Web Design
ARL/OLMS Online Lyceum Course
May 31-June 17, 2005

The Association of Research Libraries is pleased to offer 
the Online
Lyceum course, Accessible Web Design. Based directly on 
participants' feedback gathered from course evaluation 
forms, this course was redesigned in winter 2002 with a 
renewed focus on Web accessibility standards and 
incorporates a higher level of facilitator feedback
through new activities and assignments.

Accessible Web Design directly addresses the fact that Web 
sites that do not account for the wide variety of end-user 
environments may end up excluding certain populations. 
However, by adhering to accessibility standards, they are 
capable of broadcasting to an even larger audience through 
new devices that are otherwise unable to read your Web 
pages, such as Web tools to assist people with 
disabilities, Personal Data Assistant (PDAs), Web TV, and 
other information appliances.

> * Become aware of accessible design principles and resources through 
> the discussion and examination of accessibility issues.
> * Begin thinking critically about the issues related to accessibility 
> and the practice of Web design. * Consider the various needs of your 
> audience.
> * Become familiar with Web site accessibility guidelines and 
> evaluation tools that will help you to design a Web site with 
> adherence to the World Wide Web Consortium's (W3C) Priority Level One 
> accessibility guidelines and Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act 
> Amendments of 1998.

> The intended audience is producers of Web-based content who are 
> concerned with creating flexible and scaleable Web sites that meet the 
> World Wide Web Consortium accessibility guidelines. Prior Web 
> experience is not required.

> Certificates of Completion will be issued to those participants who 
> submit all course assignments and a final online course evalution 
> form. Five (5) MLA continuing education contact hours are awarded upon 
> the successful completion of this course.
