Librarian for French & Italian, Germanic Studies, Classical Studies,
and Comparative Literature
The Indiana University Bloomington Libraries are seeking a creative and
enthusiastic individual for the position of Librarian for French &
Italian, Germanic Studies, Classical Studies, and Comparative
Literature. The person serving in this position is a member of the
Subject and Area Librarians Council (SALC)

Head of SALC.
The Indiana University Bloomington Libraries

research library systems in North America, providing strong collections,
quality service and instructional programs, and leadership in the
application of information technologies. The Bloomington campus includes
approximately 37,000 students and 1,600 faculty. The IU Libraries
consist of twenty libraries on the Bloomington campus, five libraries in
Indianapolis, and a library at each of the other six campuses across the

The IU Bloomington Libraries are active members of regional and national
associations and consortia, including the Committee on Institutional
Cooperation, the Association of Research Libraries' SPARC Project, the
Digital Library Federation, the Center for Research Libraries, and the
Research Libraries Group.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The Librarian in this position serves as the
collections and public services specialist for Classical Studies,
Comparative Literature, French & Italian, and Germanic Studies. He or
she:
* Serves as the liaison to the departments of French &
Italian, Germanic Studies, Classical Studies, and Comparative
Literature.
* Provides routine reference service in the Libraries'
Research Collections Reference Department and advanced reference service
in areas of responsibility.
* Builds and manages collections in all formats; manages
domestic and foreign approval plans in areas of responsibility; makes
preservation treatment recommendations for these collections.
* Prepares collections and resource guides, creates and
maintains subject-specific websites.
* Oversees collections budgets in areas of responsibility
and helps to develop external funding opportunities.
* In consultation with faculty, makes decisions about
materials to be sent to the Libraries' offsite storage facility.
* Participates in the Libraries' instructional activities.
* Participates in library and system-wide professional
activities.
* In cooperation with the staff of the Libraries' Digital
Library Program and constituents, identifies collections and resources
suitable for publication in digital form.
* Participates in relevant professional associations and
collaborates with peers in other CIC and ARL libraries on matters
relating to collections.
QUALIFICATIONS: ALA-accredited master's degree in library or
information science preferred, with advanced degree in a subject area
relevant to the responsibilities listed above, or equivalent combination
of education and experience in an academic setting. Reading knowledge
of French, German and Italian. Bibliographic knowledge of Dutch,
Norwegian, Danish, Swedish, and Latin. Understanding of the information
needs of scholars and the application of digital and information
technologies within the research environment. Experience in collection
development and teaching or bibliographic instruction. Excellent oral
and written communication skills. Proven ability to work independently
and collegially in a complex, rapidly changing environment. Ability to
meet the requirements of a tenure-track appointment. Ability to apply
new technologies to library services.
SALARY AND BENEFITS: Salary and rank are negotiable and competitive,
depending upon qualifications and experience. This is a tenure-track
academic appointment that includes eligibility for sabbatical leaves.
Benefits include a university health care plan, TIAA/CREF
retirement/annuity plan, group life insurance, and liberal vacation and
sick leave.
