Description Have you been wondering when/whether your library should consider adopting wireless technology? Planning to remodel or build and need to understand the networking options for the future, short and long term? What do you need to know to talk to vendors and computer specialists? This full-day workshop will include a short history and overview of how "wireless" works, types of wireless standards and applications (WLAN, WAN, Bluetooth, and more), wireless devices (PDA, laptop, and others), library case studies, and planning for the wireless future. From this workshop, you will be able to:
§ Understand networking option for your library
§ Know how a wireless network works
§ Explain the advantages and disadvantages of wireless networks to others
§ Communicate with vendors and technical services staff about wireless networking
This workshop is intended for librarians, library staff, library board members, and library administrators who are interested in learning about the basics of wireless networks. It is NOT a class on how to set p a wireless network. Presented by Bill Drew, Systems Librarian at SUNY-Morrisville. He maintains the Wireless Librarian Web site, moderates the LibWireless discussion group, and moderates the LISNews Wireless blog. This workshop is funded by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation administered by the MBLC and the Massachusetts Regional Library Systems. Participants need to bring a brown-bag lunch.
