Before 1.0 I believe some updates broke some plugins and extensions.
There were a couple versions where you even had to delete the profile
to be safe. I believe now that it's 1.0 they are going to try to make
sure things like that don't happen. I haven't had any problems since
updates.mozilla went into effect.
I presume you know that you can turn off update notifications. It's in
the Advanced area of the preferences. You can also change some of the
advanced options of updating by going to about:config in the address
bar and seaching for update. I'm not sure why or how the patrons were
trying to update. 0.8 I believe had a patch that was offered through
an update page but I don't remember it breaking any plugins.
