[WEB4LIB] Paper ID - a definition?

These are usually called Article Numbers and were introduced in 
electronic journals to replace page numbers, since pagination is 
often irrelevant to these journals.

The American Physical Society began using them in a major way a few 
years ago in all its journals- this allowed them to to online 
publication and crossref deposit in advance of print pagination; APS 
considers the electronic version to be the versions of record. This 
year AIP has started using them in all its journals; AGU has been 
using them for about 3 years. The PLoS journals and Biomedcentral 
journals also use article numbers in preference to page numbers. 
Article number is widely used in many smaller electronic-only 
journals.
