Indeed.  There are plenty of idiots in the whole thing.  The student.
The two professors who vouched for him (but how could they vouch for
anything besides that he "was a good and truthful guy" or whatever).
The reporter.  The editor.

And then there are all of the incredibly gullible librarians from ALA
on down to us "regular folks" who got their knickers in a knot without
even investigating further.  We should all know that things aren't
true "just because they appear in the newspaper".
