There is a commercial alternative also: for years I have used dtSearch, a
full-text indexing program (in fact I first came across it as DOS shareware
in about 1988). It takes a long time to build an index but it's blazingly
fast on searches. I mention it because it works well across multiple network
drives which I don't know if Google or Microsoft desktop engines will do (I
had the impression that they would only search a C: drive, not D: thru Z: -
might be totally wrong about that).
