WordPress is excellent (www.wordpress.org).  It is very simple to set up 
and use, yet full-featured.  I like it better than Movable Type, a 
commercial software, which is what runs the two work-related blogs I 
managed.  I've also used Thingamablog (thingamablog.sourceforge.net), 
which is much more basic but still functional.
