Position: Web Services/Reference Librarian
Position Description: The Gelman Library is seeking an innovative and collaborative individual to develop and manage the Gelman Library System web presence. Works with library units and appropriate University departments and leads a library-wide Web Steering Committee to coordinate the design, development, and evaluation of the Library Systems website. Collaborates with the appropriate working groups to create content; develop and promote web-based instruction; maintain security and file back-up; coordinate and manage usability studies; and explore and maintain an appropriate platform for the Gelman website. Monitors and implements appropriate changes in Web technology and software; and promotes staff knowledge of web-based technologies. Supervises a part-time student assistant who assists with complex coding and site management and maintains web usage statistics. Participates in public service activities through reference desk rotation (5-10 hours/week), including evenings and
weekends. This position reports to the Associate University Librarian for Public Services.
Required qualifications: ALA accredited MLS with two years post-MLS experience. Experience with: design, development, and management of academic library web sites; working with images and graphic design in the development of web pages; principles of web site design and usability; integration of web technology into teaching. Knowledge of HTML and familiarity with web editing tools such as Dreamweaver MX; awareness of emerging trends in web technology. Experience providing reference services. Strong written and oral communication skills; problem solving skills. Evidence of ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
Desired qualifications: Familiarity with Cold Fusion, Javascript, Cascading Style Sheets, and other tools for creating dynamic web pages; expertise in conducting usability studies; leadership skills; experience with project management; reference or instruction experience in an academic environment.
APPOINTMENT RANK AND SALARY: Appointment at the rank of either Librarian II (minimum 2 years experience; minimum salary $40,000) or Librarian III (minimum 7 years experience; minimum salary $45,000). Rank and salary based on qualifications and experience.
