Department Head, Application Development Services
The Health Sciences Library, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
seeks a creative and innovative manager to lead its dynamic Application
Development Services (ADS) Department.
The ADS Department Head serves as a member of the Health Sciences
Library senior management team which has the responsibility to create
the HSL overall vision and guide the process of setting priorities;
develop appropriate strategies for success in achieving objectives;
enable successful outcomes through best use of library assets including
staff, funds, collections, technology, and facilities; assure highest
possible performance and quality of services.
<>The ADS Department Head leads the design and maintenance of a dynamic
HSL virtual presence; promotes the services of the ADS department to
library’s constituents; builds collaborative relationships with health
affairs schools, other campus libraries, NC AHEC, other biomedical
libraries, and other professional organizations and schools; stays
abreast of and communicates to library staff about relevant initiatives
occurring throughout Health Affairs; pursues entrepreneurial and grant
opportunities; manages HSL’s Collaboration Center – a technology enabled
center to encourage multi-disciplinary discovery; empowers, coaches, and
mentors staff in their professional development; fosters a positive,
effective, and collaborative team environment; employs best IT
practices, standards, and emerging technologies to improve existing
systems and to meet the library’s future needs; collaborates with the
Information Technology Operations Department to ensure successful
integration and implementation of new technology applications; and
establishes appropriate standards for application development and
propriety software.
*Required*: Advanced degree in library or information science or health
sciences related discipline; demonstrated experience and solid working
knowledge of advanced applications development technologies and
concepts; excellent collaboration skills and proven ability to create
and support partnerships; demonstrated success in building collaborative
relationships with diverse groups, managing multiple projects; managing
professional staff in a team environment and working successfully with
both technical and non-technical people; record of successful research
or development in information management arenas including building and
maintaining web and software applications; and excellent oral and
written communication skills.
*Desired:* Relevant Doctoral degree, at least 5 years applications
development experience; background with applications tools such as
ColdFusion and HTML, knowledge of database design; experience with
intranet design and/or development; involvement teaching, consulting, or
presenting; and successful Grant Writing endeavors.

The Health Sciences Library (HSL) manages information and knowledge to
advance health and health care. The Library’s vision is to be an
essential partner in the success of all health related programs and
activities at UNC, providing demonstrable benefit to health education
and research and contributing to positive health outcomes for all. This

who will use it to discover, teach, learn, and make health care

The Health Sciences Library serves faculty, students, and staff in
schools of Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Public Health; a
600-bed teaching hospital; and North Carolina AHEC - the statewide
program for health professional education. The University of North
Carolina and the HSL are known for a rich collaborative environment. HSL
employs 60 FTE staff and has an annual budget of $6 million. The library
is nationally recognized for its leadership in outreach and education
services. It provides a unique WWW presentation of locally mounted and
Internet-accessible electronic resources and services through the HSL

*Salary and Benefits*:
Salary commensurate with experience, $55,000 minimum with 5 years
experience. State benefits include annual and sick leave; state or
TIAA/CREF retirement plan.
